Lancia since the legendary Fulvia in the 60s, has been at the top of rally sport. Since the FIA in 1985 rejected plans for a group S regulations and even contended that the violent group B class on the ground that the cars with their 5-600 hp turbocharged engines, simply was too fast and thus dangerous, it was a serious setback for the rally sport . Here was the Lancia again among the pioneering automakers because they already had their Delta HF 4x4 on the drawing board, designed with lessons learned from the violent S4 rally car.
